About the Org
REEL is a 501c3 non-profit that ensures Silicon Valley twice-exceptional students thrive in school by raising parent and educator awareness and understanding of practical, research-based strategies to address their needs successfully. Twice-exceptional (2e) learners experience learning differences (neurodivergence) such as dyslexia, ADHD, or autism AND significant academic, creative, and/or leadership strengths. Their unique brain wiring makes them appear wildly asynchronous—they’re exceptional at some aspects of learning and living, and confounded by others. Their teachers, family, and friends are often confused by their performance, interactions, and behaviors; as a result, 2e students can feel isolated, anxious, and sometimes suicidal.
We support 2e kids by building bridges between educators and parents. For educators, we create and curate resources, workshops, and programs to help them make school a place that 2e learners can be successful. For parents, we organize and disseminate events and tools to help parents learn to advocate for and support their 2e kids. REEL has reached tens of thousands of caregivers and educators through our events, downloadable resources, blogs, Google Group, workshops, and more. We know our work is life changing; as one parent shared, “Being a 2e parent in a non-2e environment is lonely and discouraging. REEL has created a space for caregivers to lift each other up in real time.” The 2e have enormous potential and are entitled to thrive, a right they are often denied.
