The third annual Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit took place on Wednesday, November 15, 2023. This vibrant in-person gathering, proudly co-hosted by Thrive Alliance and Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN), brought together a diverse spectrum of changemakers including nonprofit leaders, staff, and board members, along with cross-sector partners such as government and philanthropy to champion racial justice and equity.
This year's Racial Justice Summit theme is Partnership & Collective Responsibility. We aim to unite local nonprofit and government partners and foster renewed commitment and collaborative efforts to enhance community outcomes, particularly for our most impacted communities. We'll take tangible steps toward forging a more racially just and equitable community with fellow nonprofit leaders and cross-sector allies. Together, we aspire to build momentum toward a more inclusive democracy with race and equity at the heart of all our actions.
We are thrilled to have Angela Glover Blackwell, Founder in Residence at PolicyLink, as our keynote speaker. Her long-standing advocacy for racial and economic equity, along with her expertise in leveraging public policy for positive change, promises to inspire and ignite meaningful conversations.

We believe healing justice is an action and that as nonprofits, we should be actively working to transform the conditions that have caused harm.
The Summit is designed for the region's nonprofit organizations leadership, staff, and board members to engage in dialogue about how to meet the promises made in the nonprofit racial equity pledge, as well as to gain tools and learn strategies to advance racial justice and equity within their institutions and in our community.

The Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit was a hybrid event scheduled for the week of Oct 31 - Nov 4, 2022. Some sessions were virtual (via Zoom) and some were in person (in San Mateo & Santa Clara counties).
The Summit is hosted by Silicon Valley Council of Nonprofits (SVCN) and Thrive, The Alliance of Nonprofits for San Mateo County (Thrive Alliance).
SVCN and Thrive Alliance are committed to making our Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit accessible to nonprofit employees who have been underrepresented in nonprofit leadership and management roles. For this year's summit, we have adopted a Pay-What-You-Can model.

Last year, we held “A Candid Discussion with Local Equity Officers: The Future of Racial Justice in Government” at our Inaugural Nonprofit Racial Justice Summit and heard about new governmental departments supporting racial justice in San Mateo and Santa Clara Counties. This year, hear Dr. Rocio Luna (Deputy County Executive, Santa Clara County) and Shireen Malekafzali (Chief Equity Officer, San Mateo County) rejoin the Summit to reflect on the progress made by their offices over the past year, the challenges and opportunities for growth, and their visions for how we can create pathways to racial healing by leveraging our collective power and resources across sectors.

Learn how art intersects with racial equity and what are the ways it has impacted our racial justice movement in the nonprofit sector.
Daly City Youth Poet Laureate Program poets Chloe Chou, Jescent Marcelino, and Hanna Docampo Pham will perform original poetry and engage the group in a collaborative poetry making session.
Casa Circulo Cultural will teach the group to make Mexican Paper Flowers, a traditional craft that has been a part of Mexican tradition for over 200 years and is especially significant during the upcoming Dia de Muertos (Day of the Dead) Celebration.
Enjoy the exhibit Expressions of Joy from seven local San Mateo artists curated by the Redwood City Arts and Parks Foundation and supported by the Chan Zuckerberg Initiative.
How is art healing the injustices of the world we know today? Join us for this special collaboration to kick off San Jose State University's Transforming Communities: A Movement to Racial Justice Summit.
This celebration of art, music, culture and an honoring of Native American Heritage Month will feature live performances from local artists showcasing how they have channeled their art to heal themselves and their communities.

Our panel will discuss how elected officials/commissioners of color have dealt with their position of power. You can expect to gain insight into these politicians' entry barriers in this session. What did it take to engage their community and raise voting among disenfranchised communities? They will discuss what it means to them to build power.
During this panel discussion, we will learn how nonprofits have been able to transition to a lived experience advisory board. Join us to understand what it takes to have an advisory board hold power and how it has impacted their community.

Nonprofit organizations often work with clients that have experienced cultural, political, and societal factors that contextualize trauma. It is important to recognize and understand the roles and actions we can take to promote healing and prevent future trauma. This workshop will provide an introduction to a healing trauma-informed organizational change model to practice cultural humility with staff as a facilitator of improved service delivery for clients from culturally marginalized communities.
